Abstract

This paper presents an investigation into the historical records and research findings in regard to the Chungcheong Gamyeong(監 營;a provincial governor’s office) in Gongju(公州) in late Chosun Dynasty. There was a ten-year period of absolutely no follow-up studies on the Chungcheong Gamyeong after the first pioneering one in 1990. It’s fortunate that the local government decided to grant its attention and support to the related projects and researches in the anniversary of its 400 years in 2002. In recent years, several treatises have been published, as well. However, its research results still remain in the fundamental stage of accumulation. There are a lot of aspects to shed light onto regarding the specific operational status and administrative system, financial structure, and culture of Gamyeong. Those areas need research efforts, and so do biographic researches on the lives of the Chungcheong-do Gwanchalsa(觀察使;provincial governors.) It’s urgent to discover, gather, and arrange the historical records and materials about Chungcheong Gamyeong in order to activate its researches and utilize the concerned contents. Systematic efforts to investigate, discover, and gather data should be made for the materials housed at major institutions such as 충청감영 역사기록 정리의 성과와 과제 143 Gyujanggak of Seoul National University and Jangseogak of the Academy of Korean Studies and for the books and old documents about Chungcheong Gamyeong possessed by the descendants of the Chungcheong-do Gwanchalsa(provincial governors.) It’s also necessary to pick out important data and materials, translate them with notes, and publish them in order to promote the culture of Chungcheong Gamyeong to the public and utilize it as the source of cultural contents. The concerned agencies and organizations must show active support and interest to the process of gathering and processing those materials along with researchers.
