Abstract

The restoration project of Jeonla-gamyoung(old government office building) is arising as the most important history-cultural project for the Jeonju City in 2008. The gamyoung restoration project is very special history-cultural project which is possible in very few traditional cities of Korea. Among those traditional cities, the Jeonla-gamyoung of Jeonju was the center with most productive capacity during the Choseon Dynasty. In addition, with the Jeonla-gamyoung at the center, cultural achievements bloomed such as many of Korean tradition such as Pansori (Korean narrative song),Hanji(Korean paper), Bibimbap and folding Fan. From this point of view, the Jeonla-gamyoung restoration project has following meanings. First, the restoration project is a spirit enhancement project which revives the pride by restoring the historicity and symbolism. Second is that this project is the main part of the traditional culture centered city project. Third, the restoration project is cultural heritage industry which materializes the history meaning of Jeonla-gamyoung site into tourism. Finally, it is city restoration project for the activation of old downtown area which is being rapidly collaborated due to the relocation of Jeon-buk provincial office. This study is suggesting that for the proper memorial of Jeonlagamyoung, the human-centered memorial project has to be promoted. The study also suggests that the project has to be symbolic restoration centered around the deliverance of Jeonlagamyoung’s meaning instead of just restoring the building. Then the study is asserting that the communication restoration which connects two main culture block of Jeonju “Hanok Village - KyungkiJeon”and “Gaeksa- road without traffic-Movie Street” has to be achieved through the Jeonla-gamyoung. The Jeonlagamyoung has to be not only the restoration of history but also the motivation for the cultural communication for all generations.
