지리 교과에서 학습자의 그래프 활용 특성에 관한 연구

지리 교과에서 그래프의 활용은 도해 능력의 신장과 정보의 수집, 조직 및 분석 능력을 포함한 지리적 기능의 발달에 기여할 수 있으며, 지리적 현상에 보다 객관적인 방식으로 접근할 수 있는 기회를 제공해 준다.본 연구에서는 지리 교과서에 제시된 그래프 자료의 특성과 학습자들의 활용 특성을 알아보고 학습자 특성을 반영한 향후 지리 교과서 그래프 자료의 개선 방향에 대해 논의하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 조사 결과는 다음과 같다.첫째, 지리 교과에서 자주 사용되는 그래프는 기후 그래프, 막대 그래프, 원 그래프, 선 그래프를 들 수 있는데 동일한 유형의 그래프일지라도 구체적인 형식과 제시 방식에 있어서는 매우 다양한 특성을 보였다.둘째, 중학교 수준의 학생들은 그래프의 형식적 측면에 매우 민감하게 반응하기 때문에 그래프의 형식이 지나치게 복잡할 경우 그래프가 보여주고자 하는 정보와 의미에 대해서는 소홀해질 가능성이 크다는 것을 짐작할 수 있다. 무엇보다도 그래프에 대한 학생들의 부담을 가중시키고 지리 학습에 대한 흥미를 감소시킬 수 있기 때문에 지리적 기능의 발달에 있어서도 긍정적이지 못하다. 따라서 중학교 수준의 지리 교과에서 사용되는 그래프 자료는 전달해주고자 하는 정보가 명확히 드러날 수 있도록 간결한 형식으로 개발되어야 한다. 또한 그래프를 통해 전달하고자 하는 핵심적인 지리적 정보가 무엇인지를 분명히 하는 것이 필요하다.
Abstract
The use of graph in geography subject can contribute to expansion of basic graphicacy and to development of geographical skills including collecting, organization, and analysis of information.This study investigated quality of graph in geography textbook and learners? character of using graph, discussed direction for improvement of graph material in geography textbook. The investigation results to this are as follows.First, the types of graph that are often used in geography textbook are climo graph, bar graph, and pie graph, line graph. Though type of graph is same, concrete form of graph and the number of variables are very various.Second, we can guess that students are apt to neglect core information and meaning of graph in case that form of graph is too complex. Above all, graph of too complex form isn?t good for development of geographical skills. Therefore graph materials used in geography subject of middle school must be developed in simple form in order to show core information obviously. And it is important to make students find geographical information, understand meaning of it for themselves.
