Abstract
This study aims to identify how university students, as educational consumers, perceive what constitutes a ‘good’ extracurricular program and to explore its characteristics using qualitative research methods. To achieve this, in-depth individual interviews were conducted with 15 undergraduate students from University A in Seoul, who had experience participating in extracurricular programs. The collected data were analyzed using the constant comparision method. The findings of this study are as follows. First, students perceived good extracurricular programs as those that: (1) provide diverse experiences beyond regular coursework, (2) enhance networking opportunities, (3) can be included in resumes or personal statements, and (4) offer tangible achievements or visible outcomes. Second, the characteristics that students recognized as indicators of good extracurricular programs were categorized into four main aspects: educational content, educational methods, educational support, and educational evaluation. In terms of educational content, students emphasized students emphasized career exploration and job preparation, psychological stability and self-understanding, and enhancement of major-related competencies and practical expertise. In terms of educational methods, small-group formats that facilitate networking, project- or practice-based learning, and flexible formats tailored to the program’s subject matter were highlighted. For educational support, students considered systematic and integrated promotion, sufficient financial support, professionalized and expanded staffing, and the provision of adequate space and facilities. Lastly, in terms of educational evaluation, students emphasized the need for concrete feedback on their outcomes and the importance of continuous follow-up throughout the program. This study holds significant meaning in that it comprehensively analyzed students’ experiences and opinions regarding participation in extracurricular programs—which had previously been presented only as fragmented, quantitative findings—and identified the characteristics of good extracurricular programs from a learner-centered perspective.
