초록

This study delves into the novel concept of control in the era of the therapeutic culture. In the 1960s, American cultural theorist, Philip Rieff diagnosed that American society experienced a fundamental transition in its cultural mechanism. Throughout the history of the West, the cultural mechanism had evolved around the relation between community and its constituent. Based on Rieff's profound analysis on Sigmund Freud, a founder of psychoanalysis, this article traces the moment that begins a new mode of control. This paper argues that Rieff unwittingly suggested the subtle balance of various modes, modus vivendi, as a new concept of control. By looking into the major concepts and theory that Rieff had left, this provides an opportunity to demonstrate how new culture had activated new mechanism of control.
