Abstract

This paper analyzes how the theological system emphasizing oneness in Deuteronomistic History (DH) has led to exclusive religious identity and the justification of violence. It further conducts a comparative study with the modern philosophical concept of ‘alterity’ as an alternative framework. While DH sought to establish the identity and survival of the community through the monotheistic faith in Yahweh and the centralization of the Jerusalem temple, it also revealed a pattern of justifying exclusion and violence against ‘the Other’ in the name of God. This study critically examines violent biblical texts, such as those concerning ‘ḥērem’ and the conquest of land, as foundations for such justification, and aims to reinterpret them ethically through the lens of ‘alterity’. Moving beyond the violence of exclusive religious identity, the research explores the potential for reconfiguring ‘the theology of oneness’ within the context of hospitality and responsibility toward ‘the Other’. Ultimately, this paper seeks a theological and ethical shift in response to the long-standing dilemma of religion and violence, offering an interdisciplinary space of reflection through engagement with ‘alterity’. In doing so, it presents a new direction for religious identity that aspires toward coexistence and peace in a world where violence has become normalized.
