Abstract

This article examines the problematic relationship of language and otherness revealed in Derrida’s “Violence and Metaphysics.” I argue that Derrida’s conception of the other is based on his insights into the primordial power and violence of language generated from its movement of signifying the other in everyday life. Previous studies in the Derrida’s “Violence and Metaphysics” mostly try to discuss the problems of language, being and politics in terms of Derrida’s interpretation of Levinas, betraying limitations to deal with the deeper problem of violence. On the other hand, although the legal theorists and deconstructivists confront the problem of violence in Derrida’s thoughts, they do not fully disclose the correlation of signification, ontology and violence. Therefore, I attempt to analyze the questionable relationship of language, being and violence with a close reading of the “Violence and Metaphysics.” While Derrida recognizes Levinas’ insightful views of otherness, he tries to show that human beings cannot avoid violent processes of signification in which the light of language and its logical system (logos) comprehends the disclosedness of being in a limited way. For Derrida, the forceful movement of definition inherent in the language and thinking of being as such is not only negative but positive in that it can resist the enforcement of injustice destroying the existential basis of being with others. Derrida’s critical thoughts on the being and violence reveals the primordial possibility and limitation of philosophizing as a dynamic experience to grasp the ethical ground of human coexistence facing political reality.
