Abstract
Students with or at risk for learning disabilities in mathematics struggle to understand multiplication conceptually as well as to follow multiplication procedures compared to their same-age peers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the partial products algorithm instruction with the area model on the performance of the two-digit multiplications for three elementary students at risk for learning disabilities in mathematics. Additionally, this study explored the transfer effect of the intervention on standardized mathematics assessments. This study utilized a multiple-probe design across participants. The results of this study revealed that all the participants showed considerable improvements in their two-digit multiplication performance after receiving instruction in the partial products algorithm using the area model (PND = 100%; Tau-U = 1, p = .00). In addition, the effect of the intervention appeared to transfer to standardized assessments that measure numeracy, arithmetic, and computational fluency.
