Abstract

This study investigates the selection factors and working conditions of platform work. Using 2018 data from the Korean Labor Panel Survey, we empirically compare hourly wages, working hours, and monthly income between platform and non-platform workers. Our findings reveal that the platform workforce is heterogeneous and can be divided into two groups: ‘necessity-driven’ and ‘value-seeking’ workers. Necessity-driven workers, possessing fewer assets, tend to increase their working hours to earn higher monthly income. Conversely, value-seeking workers, who hold relatively more assets, secure high monthly income through high hourly wages despite shorter working hours. This heterogeneity implies that policies for platform labor must be precisely targeted and differentiated according to worker characteristics.
