Abstract
Buddhist historical text(佛敎史書), in whatever form or structure, illustrates the flow of Buddhist history. Japan began compiling Buddhist historical text relatively late, in the 12th century, and the current extant collection comprises 238 volumes in 18 titles. While fewer Buddhist historical texts exist than historical texts documenting or describing secular political history, they are invaluable, as the Middle ages were a period of Buddhism. Despite this, Buddhist historical texts have been largely ignored in Japanese Buddhist studies, being treated as mere historical sources. Furthermore, they have been largely excluded from history of historiography(史學史). The purpose of this work is to rectify this situation and highlight the necessity and significance of conducting a full-scale study of Buddhist historical texts. The three formats found in Japanese Buddhist historical texts are the Monographies and treatises(書志體), the Ranked biographies(列 傳體), the Annals and biographies(紀傳體). The Monographies and treatises is particularly noteworthy. It was a suitable format for demonstrating the fact that early Japanese Buddhism developed and flourished around the eight sects(八宗) of Nanto(南都). In Japan, the compilation of Buddhist historical texts was concentrated in two periods. Of the 18 sects, five were compiled in the 13th and 14th centuries, and 11 in the 17th and 18th centuries. The 13th and 14th centuries were periods of great instability, marked by political division and social turmoil. The Buddhist community also underwent significant changes during these periods. Unlike the previous eight sects, which tended to be state-oriented and doctrinal, new sects with strong popular and practical tendencies emerged, competing with each other to assert their own legitimacy and doctrinal orthodoxy. During this period, those who recognized the need to organize Buddhist texts and document their history began compiling Buddhist historical texts. The 17th and 18th centuries, with the rise of the Edo shogunate and the establishment of a centralized system, witnessed political and social stability. However, the shogunate attempted to reorganize Buddhism to align with secular politics and social order, and the newly emerged Confucian scholars who spearheaded the shogunate’s power advocated for the exaltation of Buddhism. In this context, a large number of Buddhist historical texts were compiled to emphasize the role of the Buddhist order and secure Buddhism’s historical legitimacy. In short, these Buddhist historical texts in Japan were the product of a proactive response from the Buddhist community to political and social upheaval.
