본고에서는 조지 산타야나의 자연주의적 경향과 플라톤주의적 경향의 두 시기에 나타나는 철학적 사고의 전반적인 특징들과, 여러 학자들이 논의하고 있는 그의 사상적 논의 방식의 쟁점들에 관해서 살펴볼 것이다. 이러한 쟁점들을 논의하고자 하는 이유는 산타야나의 사상적 업적을 균형 있게 재평가하기 위해서이며, 무엇보다도 그가 철학계에 지대한 영향을 미쳤음에도 불구하고 한국 내에서 그의 철학적 연구가 전무하며, 국외의 전문 철학자들 사이에서도 그 가치를 높이 인정받지 못하고 그의 철학적 구조를 따르는 이가 많지 않은 이유들을 구체적으로 고찰하기 위한 것이다. 많은 학자들은 산타야나의 이론에 대해서, 그가 글의 서술방식은 자연주의적이며 기술 심리학적인데 반해 그 내용은 일관성 없는 관념론적 논의에 그치고 있다고 폄하하기도 한다. 이러한 논쟁들을 검토한 후 그것이 산타야나의 절충적 논의 방식의 문장 속에서 일부는 해소되기도 하며, 산타야나의 의도를 잘못 해석하여 발생한 경우도 있음을 지적해 나갈 것이다. 산타야나 철학의 이해를 위한 중요한 사항은 유물론자의 철학적 관점에서 인간의 심리, 도덕적 가치, 그리고 정신적 가치를 산타야나가 어떻게 다루고 있는지 살펴보는 것이다. 따라서 본고에서는 안정적이며 지속되는 행복을 보장하는 가장 완전한 존재의 정당성은 선천적으로 주어지는 것이 아니라 이성적인 훈련의 대가로 주어진다는 산타야나의 논의를 중심으로 그가 의미하는 철학의 주제는 삶, 무엇보다도 더 나은 행복한 삶을 만드는 것임에 주목하여 그의 철학적 의미를 논의할 것이다. 산타야나의 철학은 실제로 현재의 한국 사회에 시사하는 바가 크다. 특히 문화, 종교, 정치에서 이념적 대립과 갈등이 점점 극심해지고 있는 우리 사회의 현실에 비추어 볼 때, 그의 도덕적 가치와 이성적 구현에 관한 철학적 논의들은 그 유효한 지점을 상당히 점유하리라 확신하며 이와 관련한 논의들은 다음의 과제로 남긴다.
Abstract
This thesis will examine the general characteristics of philosophical thoughts of Santayana appearing in the area of naturalistic position and platonism. Especially, it will examine the issues over the ideological discussing method of Santayana many schola are debating. The reason why it tries to examine these issues is to re-evaluate the ideological achievements of Santayana. His philosophical research is nonexistent in spite of tremendous his influences on philosophical circles. In addition, He is not highly evaluated from overseas specialized philosophers. And further more, not many people are following the philosophical structure. Thus, the reason why it tries to examine these issues is to specifically contemplate those reasons. Many scholars undervalue his theories because of the reason that the contents of his theories are just the inconsistent ideological discussion, while his way of description is naturalistic and descriptive psychology. After checking the issues, it will discuss the fact that the issues are resolved in the compromising discussion sentences of Santayana. The important things for the understanding of Santayana philosophy are to examine how Santayana is dealing with the psychology of people, ethical value and psychological value from the point of materialistic philosophy. Thus, this thesis will deal with the fact that the perfect existence guaranting consistent happiness is not innately given but given in reward of rational training. The philosophical theme of Santayana is related with our lives. It is aiming at the happiness of our lives. For that reason his philosophy is highly evaluated these days.
