BWHEBB, BWHEBL, BWTRANSH [Hebrew]; BWGRKL, BWGRKN, and BWGRKI [Greek] PostScript® Type 1 and TrueType fonts Copyright ©1994-2015 BibleWorks, LLC. All rights reserved. These Biblical Greek and Hebrew fonts are used with permission and are from BibleWorks (www.bibleworks.com). 뿐만 아니라 일반적으로 이 기원의 수혜자들은 ‘너희’(meta. pa,ntwn u`mw/n 또는 u`mi/n)로 표현되지만 여기서는 이와 동일한 표현을 쓰지 않고 완전히 다른 두 표현이 쓰였기 때문이다(eivrh,nh evpV auvtou.j kai. e;leoj kai. evpi. to.n VIsrah.l tou/ qeou/).

Abstract

Who are the Beneficiaries of Peace Benediction in Galatians 6:16 Ki Cheol Joo (Kosin University) In this article, the special features of the peace benediction in Galatians 6:16 is compared with those in other Pauline letters. Paul invokes Godʼs blessing upon those who walk by this rule, which means that Paulʼs blessing is conditional. In addition, Paul does not simply use the second person plural pronouns for the beneficiaries of blessing as he usually does in the peace benedictions in his other letters. There is another unusual feature in 6:16. Paul uses both the terms ʻpeaceʼ and ʻmercyʼ; whereas, only eirene (peace) is used in other peace benedictions. For this reason, scholars have attempted to answer the question as to why Paul composed the peace benediction differently. However, the debate is still ongoing and it seems that satisfying answers have not yet been given in relation to the immediately preceding context. Although Eung Bong Lee attempted to interpret Galatians 6:16 in a different way in the perspective of syntax and semantics in 2010, his conclusion also does not seem to reflect sufficiently the feature of Galatians as an epistle nor the immediate context of Galatians 6:16. For this reason, I comment first on the weakness of Lee's conclusion summarizing his concluding part. Afterward, I briefly look at what the immediate context of Galatians 6:16 is saying. In Galatians 6:12-15, Paul reveals the ultimate motives of the false teachers and his own. By revealing these, Paul suggests two models of believing in Jesus Christ. One is of the false teachers and the other is that of Paul himself; the former sets a bad example that should not be followed and the latter sets a good example to follow. Since Galatians 6:16 is connected to the preceding verse with kai, this verse should be understood in relation to the previous verses; Galatians 6:12-15 is the interpretive ground for Galatians 6:16. In order to understand Galatians 6:16, I have looked at the special features of the peace benediction in this verse in three ways. First, Paul uses 'those who walk by this rule' in order to bless all those who are following or will follow Paul's teaching and example. Second, instead of using second person plural pronouns for the beneficiaries, Paul adopts autous and ton Israel tou theou. This is because Paul wants to include all the believers (returning or potential believers) in the blessing. Third, in Paulʼs invocation of blessing, the unusual term e;leoj is added; probably because he is considering the Galatian context. Since the Galatians were struggling with a different gospel and with pressure from the false teachers to accept circumcision, Paul added the extra term eleos (mercy) alongside the usual term eirene (peace) in the peace benediction.
