본 논문은 에드 복 리(Ed Bok Lee)의 시집『미토콘드리아의 밤』(Mitochondrial Night)을 읽으며 미토콘드리아(mitochondria)를 내세운 실험적인 시가 선보이는 새로운 생태적 상상력에 주목한다. 에드 복 리는 미국의 생태시학에서 거의 논의되지 않은 시인이다. 비록 환경 위기에 대한 문제의식을 명시적으로 드러내지 않지만 자기 존재의 뿌리를 미토콘드리아로 더듬어 찾으며 인간과 세계 안의 존재들 간의 연결고리를 강조하는 그의 시는 새로운 생태시의 감각을 보여주면서 기존 생태시학의 지평을 넓히고 또 환경 정의를 수행하고 있다. 이 글은 특히「미토콘드리아의 저녁」을 중심으로 살피면서 시인의 미토콘드리아적 상상력이‘여성성’에 기댄 존재의 뿌리를 감각하고‘애도’라는 ‘문화적 기억’을 환기하고 있음을 본다. 이 두 방향에서 에드 복 리의 시는 시의 공적 가치를 실천하는 새로운 생태시의 장을 열고 있다.
Abstract
This paper reads Ed Bok Lee's poetry book Mitochondrial Night and explores his new ecological imagination represented as mitochondria. Ed Bok Lee is a poet rarely discussed within the frame of American ecological poetry. Although he does not explicitly reveal the problems concerned with environmental crisis issues, his poems searching for the roots of his existence going back through mitochondria emphasize and envision ‘human-animal-ecological interconnectedness.’Especially focusing on “Mitochondrial Evening,”this paper pays attention to his mitochondrial imagination, which senses the roots of existence leaned on “femininity” and evokes the “cultural memory” of “mourning.”In these two directions, Ed Bok-Lee's poems, inviting readers to appreciate the public value of poetry in this era of pandemic, expand the horizon of ecological poetry and become a poetic praxis of environmental justice.
