Abstract

The purpose of this study is to look at the critical literatures of Yang-Ming studies left by Joseon's Confucian scholars, who used Zhu-Xi studies as the party of their studies and to examine the contents and methods of criticism of Yang-Ming studies that appeared throughout the Joseon Dynasty. In this paper, the critical aspects of Yang-Ming studies by Yu Hui-chun and Ryu Sung-ryong, which can be distinguished by the period of "deepening understanding of Yang-Ming studies," were reviewed based on the 〈Kyungyeon(經筵 ) Diary〉 of 《Mi-am-jip》and 《seo-aejip》. Yoo Hee-chun and Ryu Sung-ryong were Yi Hwang's writer who shared the scholarly recognition with the biblical scholars of the Joseon Dynasty. In "The Contest Diary," Yu Hui-chun classified the studies of Xiang-shan and Wang Yang-Ming as the study of the lecture and criticized the philosophy, while Liu Sung-ryong's views revealed in 《Seo Ae-jip》 showed both positive and critical perceptions of Xiang-shan and Wang Yang-Ming, unlike Yoo Hee-chun. In 1573, when Wang Su-in was discussing the Confucian shrine, the two men entered the contest together, and reviewing what was discussed in the contest and the critical perception of Xiang-shan and Wang Yang-Ming, who were included in the two scholars' books. It was revealed that historical events such as personal academic exchanges and ‘Confucian shrine’ were affecting them. Furthermore, Ryu wrote critical writings with Yang-Ming studies-centric conceptual terms developing criticism of Wang Yang-Ming previous scholars, and showed Wang Yang-Ming's academic work as ‘a problem but new theory derived to correct social problems’. This fact is an essential review process for understanding the critical flow of Yang-Ming studies, as the recognition of Yang-Ming studies by Yoo Hee-chun and Ryu Seong-ryong which is a bridge to the implementation of the period of 'enhancing the atmosphere of the Yang-Ming studies' in the 'strengthening of understanding of Yang-Ming studies' period.
