Abstract
There have been attempts to predict commercial success of movies using machine learning techniques. But many of them use variables that are not available before the release of the movie, such as number of screens, reviews of critics, and online buzz. Movie executives rather want to predict result at the preproduction stage. Some studies do attempt that, but their performances are not very appealing to executives in the field. To predict success, at least we need to assess the quality of the scenarios, and the current state of AI does not seem up to it. AI, however, can be used to find similar moves, or comparables, in terms of content and style. In this respect, recent studies by a team at 20th Century Fox are promising. Also the microgenre system developed by Netflix is very sophisticated, although it requires a lot of human input.
