Abstract
This study examines the impact of the undeclared major admission system on the employment outcomes of young female graduates. Using data from the 1st to 7th waves of the Korean Education and Employment Panel II, the study employs a Heckman sample selection model to analyze employment rates and job satisfaction among young female graduates admitted through either a major-specific or undeclared major system, with a comparative focus on metropolitan and regional universities. The findings are as follows: First, approximately 80% of young women who graduated from universities entered through major-specific admission system, while 20% enrolled through the undeclared major admission system. Second, for female graduates at regional universities, strategic decision-making on undeclared major admission and major selection is associated with higher employment rates but lower job satisfaction. In contrast, among female graduates at metropolitan universities, the choice of undeclared major admission does not significantly affect employment but positively influences job satisfaction. Lastly, the positive effect of career preparation programs on employment rates is observed among female graduates from both metropolitan and regional universities.
