Abstract
Amid China’s accelerating trend of population aging, the pre-elderly group (ages 50–59) has emerged as a key demographic for realizing healthy aging. This study aims to examine the behavioral mechanisms of sports participation among Chinese pre-elderly individuals. A structured questionnaire survey was conducted with 528 pre-elderly residents in Chengdu(male: 271, female: 257, average age: 55.5), and statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 24.0 and AMOS 24.0 to assess differences in participation motivation, satisfaction, and exercise adherence based on demographic characteristics, as well as to explore the structural relationships among these variables. The findings revealed that gender and age had no significant impact on the three core variables, indicating that sports participation is becoming less constrained by these factors. However, education level(p<.001), income(p<.001), health status(p<.001), occupation(p<.001), participation frequency(p<.001), and duration(p<.001) significantly influenced sports behavior. Structural equation modeling confirmed that participation satisfaction fully mediates the relationship between motivation and adherence, with intrinsic motivation playing a particularly critical role in sustaining participation. Based on these insights, the study proposes six practical strategies: enhancing health education for individuals with low education and income, implementing differentiated intervention strategies, establishing community-based social support systems, offering programs suited to physical abilities, and encouraging habit formation through smart devices and local resources. These strategies provide both theoretical and practical implications for promoting the “Healthy China” initiative and for shaping public health policies in an aging society.
