Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of the coach’s social support, selfdetermined motivation, and expectancy-value variables perceived by the elderly who participated in the daily sports program on the re-participation of the program in the future. Participants were 97 seniors aged 60 years or older who were participating in sports programs at one sports center, one community center, and one senior welfare center. The participants engaged in daily sports programs such as table tennis, swimming, badminton, gymnastics, billiards, aerobics, yoga, and bodybuilding 1-3 times a week for 3 months. The results showed that the perceptions of the coach’s competence support, intrinsic and identified regulations of motivation, and expectancy beliefs had a positive influence on the elderly’s re-participation in the sports programs. These results provide the following educational implications to coaches in order to encourage elderly learners to re-participate in the sports programs. First, it is necessary to lead the elderly learners to recognize competence through providing specific and individualized feedback and active interaction during instruction. Second, it is necessary to apply various educational contents and methods and periodically emphasize the physical, emotional, and social effects of participating in physical activities to make the elderly perceive interest, pleasure, and multiple benefits. Third, it is necessary to organize learning activities easily and simply and to communicate in a warm and friendly manner so that the elderly can perceive a sense of accomplishment and positive selfconcept.
