Abstract

Song Siyeol influenced late Joseon Dynasty as much as he was called ‘Songja’. He was exiled to Jejudo because he opposed King Sukjong’s decision of installation of crown prince. People in Jejudo had difficulty in getting political, economical, and cultural benefit including educational one because Jejudo is the frontier and there was the ban from leaving Jejudo. Knock-out politicians who were exiled to Jejudo wielded important influence. The Confucian nobility was politican and educator, so their educational influence was considerable. Song Siyeol also borrowed some books from hyanggyo, read and debated one another with people including his grandson, and wrote books spending free time. Additionally, he was not confined to a place of exile. Even if he stayed in Jejudo for about 100 days, his contribution to education in Jejudo was great, so he was canonized into a Confucian memorial hall, Gyulimseowon although canonization was strictly prohibited then. After Gim Jeong, Gim Sangheon, Jeong On, Song Insu was canonized at Gyulimseowon, Song siyeol was done , then five sages in Jejudo was decided. Canonization of five sages is significant as the work of confirming pedigree of Dotong. Moreover, some Song Siyeol’s studensts also stayed in Jejudo as administrators or exiles, celebrated their teacher and contributed to educational activities. Yi Jonjung and Gwon Jineung introduced the debate about identity and dissimilarity between human and matter, and Gim Chuntaek livened up the educational atmosphere by writing books. Gim Jeonghi composed a poem when he visited Song siyeol’s place of exile, and Choe Ikhyeon served the education in Jejudo by various activities such as reading, writing and teaching.
