Abstract
Hoeamsa Temple site is located at the bottom of Cheonbosan Mountain in Hoeam-dong, Yangju city and is designated as Historical Site No. 128. This site was extensively developed by Naong, a monk, in late Koryo Dynasty, and was developed once more by King Seongjong in Chosun Dynasty. The site is divided into several different parts by its embankment and a number of building structures were found during excavation investigation including, Bogwangjeon, Josajeon, Seolbeobjeon, Nahanjeon and Yeongdang. It has been found that Yeongdang was equipped with Korean floor heating system which included furnace and fireplace. Structures or facilities of Hoeamsa temple site are not found, however, for the cases of other Yeongdang sites including Okryongsa temple site, Yeongamsa temple site, Samcheonsa temple site, Beobcheonsa temple site and Yeongtongsa temple site. In other words, furnace or fireplace are not built which can heat up rooms. Known that Yeondang is a symbolical structure where portraits and statues of high priests, it is difficult to assume that people lived in there. This can also be found easily by confirming with other Yeongdangs nationwide. This architecture archeology review reveals that Yeongdang in Hoeamsa temple site is a newly constructed roof tile structure in the years of King Seongjong of Chosun Dynasty. It can also be assume that Yeongdang of late Koryo Dynasty was artificially destructed during the construction process of heating system building. The new heating system building can be assumed to be used as an accommodation or a rest place when the royal family made a visit to Hoeamsa temple site.
