편견 가운데 화합을 위한 모색 : 안중근, 존 브라운, 프레더릭 더글라스의 사상

민족주의자이자 범 아시아주의자(Pan-Asianist)였던 안중근은 한 가지 심각한 문제에 봉착하였다. 서구 제국주의로부터 아시아를 지키기 위해 한중일 삼국의 화합과 상호 협력을 희망하였으나, 다른 한편으로는 일본 제국주의의 손아귀에서 시름하고 있는 한국인들의 고통을 끝내기 위해서는 무력을 사용해야만 한다고 확신했다. 본질적인 면에 있어서 이 상황은 1840년대와 1850년대의 미국과 비슷하다. 이 기간 동안 점점 더 많은 미국인들이 합법적이지만 부도덕한 노예제도에 반대하였으나, 노예제도를 찬성하는 세력들은 동시에 더욱 더 공격적이 되었다. 노예제도 폐지론자들은 노예제도를 찬성하는 세력들의 폭력에 직면하여 폭력만이 노예제도를 무너뜨릴 수 있다고 확신하였다. 그렇다면 보다 더 조화롭고 정의로운 사회를 만들기 위한 폭력의 사용은 가능한가? 흑인이지만 노예 신분으로부터 벗어난 프레더릭 더글라스(1818~1891)와 노예제도에 반대하여 무력 투쟁을 이끈 백인 존 브라운(1800~1859) 등 두 명의 노예제 폐지론자들은 이 질문에 모두 그렇다고 응답한다. 본 논문은 안중근과 프레더릭 더글라스, 존 브라운과의 대화를 통해 이 세 사람이 어떻게 폭력의 사용을 통해 사악한 제도를 무너뜨리고 조화를 이루고자 하였는지에 대한 이해를 돕고자 한다.
Abstract
As a nationalist and a Pan-Asianist, An Junggeun faced a serious problem. On one side, he hoped to bring harmony between Koreans, Chinese, and Japanese so that they could work together to defend Asia against Western imperialism. On the other, he was convinced that he had to use force to end the suffering experienced by Koreans at the hands of Japanese imperialism. In important ways, this situation was actually similar to the United States in the 1840s and 1850s. During those years, a growing number of Americans came to oppose the legal but immoral system of slavery while at the same time pro-slavery forces became more aggressive. Many abolitionists became convinced that, in the face of pro-slavery violence, only force could destroy slavery. Could force be used to create a more harmonious and just society? Two abolitionists, Frederick Douglass (1818~1891), a Black man and escaped slave, and John Brown (1800~1859), a white man who led armed resistance against slavery, both answered yes to this question. By bringing An Junggeun, Frederick Douglass, and John Brown in conversation with one another, this paper will aim to help us develop a better understanding of how these three people sought to destroy evil institutions and bring harmony through the use of force.
