Abstract
The undeniable force of globalization led to dialogues concerning the role of nation-state. Particularly interesting among them is how a city or region in a nation-state deals with globalizing economy. This study begins with reviewing previous literature on the relationship between globalization and urban economy. Based on it, Songdo Free Economic Zone in South Korea is critically analyzed with focus on the project?s ideologies and realities. Just like many mega-projects being pursued in other parts of the world, Songdo is being shaped primarily by socio-political dynamics rather than dollars and cents. Responses to globalization seem to be more complex than commonly suggested, reflecting unique local social conditions.
