Sharʿī Grounds and Rationale for Banning Alcohol in the Qurʾān and Sunnah

Since the exact meaning in Islam of the word “alcohol” and the reason for its prohibition are not known with any certainty, this paper attempts to analyze five verses that contain the word alcohol in the Qurʾān (2:219, 4:43, 47:15, 5:90-91), and 190 expressions related to alcohol and intoxication in the six ḥadīth collections. Since, according to Sunnah, any thing that makes a person drunk is defined as alcohol, whatever name it has, and a person that consumes alcohol should receive 40 or 80 lashes with a whip, this paper classifies the 190 expressions on alcohol in the ḥadīth collections into three categories: warning and promising, revelation and advertising, and declaration of the law and ordering its practice. Examining the relations between the Qurʾān and Sunnah, it explains the meaning of alcohol in the Qurʾān, the process of establishing the law for banning alcohol, and the punishment for the consumption of alcohol.
