This paper aims to examine the Shari‘ah rules for food and clothes, and the process of their formation. In order to do so, it looks into major sources of the Shari‘ah, that is, the Qur’an, Hadith (Sunnah), and the legal opinion of the four Sunni legal schools (Hanafi, Shafi’i, Maliki, and Hanbali). As a result, this paper reveals that the Qur’an introduces comprehensive norms on food and clothes, Sunnah (Hadith) embodies the norms, and the four Sunni legal schools establish the detailed regulations. Sunni legal schools adopt different sources which result in differences in legal opinion regarding food and clothes.
Abstract
