The primary question this paper attempts to answer is “what makes theProphetic Sunnah the second source of Islamic law, next only to theQur’ān?” By analyzing the role and authority of the Prophet Muhammad,his Sunnah and Hadīth, I came to conclusions as follows: First, there aremany Qur’ānic verses that demand Muslims obey and follow themessenger of Allah. Second, it is Muslims’ duty to obey and follow theSunnah because it is also the revelation from Allah. Third, there are anumber of verses on the Prophet Muhammad’s authoritative practices, suchas kissing the black stone and circling around the Ka’bah. Forth, thefounders of the four Islamic law schools adopted the Qur’ān, the Sunnah,ijmā’(consensus), and qiyās(analogy) as the principles of their schools.
