Abstract
"This paper explore the ideas of in The Gift with an eye to what might be useful from an outside perspective for inter- Korean relations, Specially, I explore the reole of gift giving to create beneficial relationships though a politics of recognition. This paper explores the importance of recognition, how different kinds of gift exchange can create egalitarian or hierarchical modes of political organizations, and the utility of gift change as a policy tool. Topics of gift of international relations: two modes of Gift giving, recognition and exchange, hierarchy and equality, agentive interpretation, help us to rethink some fundamental questions of international politics. Historically gift giving is central to diplomacy. Before relationships form between states – in which deep patterns of trading, alliance-making, or other exchange become possible – gift giving has occurred. Gift giving create the background social relationships – webs of recognition – that create expectations for future exchange. Furthermore, the way in which are given – in an egalitarian or hierarchical manner – affects the kinds of relationships that states have. In the context of inter-Korean relations. If this view of gift giving is right, then a government policy (perhaps the current one) that favors a symbolic politics of recognition may be an appropriate policy to pursue. This symbolic politics of gift giving may not be sufficient to encourage peace, but it is necessary. If the two Koreas do not believe that they recognize one another as equals, then gift giving done in a spirit of respect may give way to a competitive system that encourages conflict. In the current atmosphere, therefore, I believe that a close study of symbolic politics is more important than ever before."
