Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine Kelly’s argument and to consider the educational and social implication of it. Until now there has been misunderstanding about Kelly’s ‘committed impartiality’ in Korean domestic researches. This ought to be understand not only the mistake in interpretation but the reflection of the perspective of education in Korean society. According to Kelly, not misunderstood, teacher’ saying and not hiding his/her personal opinion enables himself/herself to be a personal witness to students, to provide opportunity to experience democratic authority and to have a great effect by collegiality. Especially I consider a significance of Kelly’s argument in a broader prospect, which is beyond the Kelly’s immediate sense. First, in an aspect of civic-education the controversial issue instruction assures the authenticity of a controversy and contributes to citizenship in both intellect and value-attitude. Second, the issue of teacher’s commitment is concerned with the reflection of a pre-existing teacher-centered power structure in classes and the task to change the structure more democratic. The third, to approve teacher’s commitment is to recognize the difference which both teacher and student have, and to contribute the democratic education based on pluralism. Especially regarding a controversy about teacher’s political neutrality, This argument shows that teacher’s expression of his political opinions is educationally worth to be approved.
