Abstract

The purpose of this study aims to test hypotheses concerning different routes to delinquency from effective parenting among adolescents who show early versus late onset of delinquent behaviors. Four waves of data collected on 3441 adolescents were used to analyze the different paths. Adolescents who reported having engaged in any of the listed delinquent behaviors in Wave 1 and Wave 2 were considered to be early starters; 648 adolescents met this criterion. During the first three waves, 1006 adolescents who reported none of the delinquent acts were considered to be late starters. By Wave 4, 193 of these adolescents had begun to engage in delinquent behavior. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to test the predictions of the various theoretical perspectives regarding the pattern of associations between effective parenting, self-control, deviant peers, and problem behaviors. The results suggest that the pathways from parenting to association with deviant peers and delinquency may differ in early and late starters. Practice and policy implications as well as further research topics were discussed to aid the search for highly effective preventive and treatment interventions.
