Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine three questions: (1) What are the changing patterns of parenting behavior and adolescents' delinquency? (2) How are these two variables longitudinally correlated? and (3) How do sociodemographic factors, such as sex, family structure and parents' education level and poverty, effect the trajectories of parenting behavior and adolescents' delinquency? Data were drawn from Korea Youth Panel Survey, a longitudinal panel study of Middle school students in the second grade and Latent Growth Curve Model(LGM) was used to analyze intraindividual changes in parenting behavior and adolescents' delinquency and interindividual differences in these changes. The result showed that the tendency of parenting behaviors increased and the level of adolescent delinquency declined nonlinearly for three years. In terms of the trajectories in parenting and delinquency, the initial level of parenting behavior and delinquency were mutually negative associated. The initial level of parenting behavior have negative effect on the rate of change in delinquency, while the initial level of delinquency have positive effect on the rate of change in parenting behavior. This results indicate that parenting behavior and delinquency are mutually correlated, and the key concept of the interaction model is well supported. The effects of children's delinquency on parenting behavior are greater than the effects of parenting behavior on children's delinquency. This also refers that in terms of the parent-adolescent relationship, child effect is much greater than parent effect. The sociodemographic factors such as child's sex, education level of parents and single father families had effects on the trajectories of parenting behavior and delinquency. Based on these findings several suggestions are made to prevent delinquency.
