Abstract

Pansori (narrative music) was developed in the 18th century, but we do not know how the music was at that time due to the absence of the physical evidence. We can reconstruct the early pansori music culture through the material culture, the drum, and its players. In this paper, I will disclose the history of the drum and the identity of the drummer in the 18th and 19th centuries, and will discover the nature of the early pansori music. The drums of the 19th century were two kinds; one is the red-colored drum with headed beater, and the other, the white- or black-colored drum with round beater. The former was same as the drums of the officer-musicians of the 18th century. It was even recorded in the Musical Canon (1493) that proves that the red-colored body was the symbol of the administrative musical instruments. It means that the early drummers were the officer-musicians. The singers of the time were also detached to the administrative bodies which can be proved in the list of the Officer-Musicians of the Eight Provinces (1842). The white-or black-colored drums were used in the 19th century. At that time the singers had traveled all over the country and could not accompany the officer-drummers who are restricted to their hometown. The drummers from the singer community grew up naturally. They are depicted with black hat, black-colored drum, and round beater. They could not use the administrative drums and tried to distinguish themselves from the officer-drummers with the different drums. The most important music of the officer-musicians is the dodeuri rhythmic cycle. The music was flew into the literati’s music salon and the pansori world in the 18th century. The early singers, who were the administrative musicians at the same time, were familiar to the dodeuri rhythmic cycle. They developed the 6-beat jinyangjo rhythmic cycle from the 6-beat dodeuri rhythmic cycle. The 12-beat jungmori rhythmic cycle was made from the mixture of two 6-beat dodeuri rhythmic cycle. In sum, the dodeuri rhythmic cycle of the officer-drummers is the most influential musical element in the formation of the pansori rhythmic cycles.
