Abstract

The present study investigated the brain activation patterns of children, diagnosed as autism spectrum disorder, and normal children between age of 8 to 13 during seeing pictures with facial expressions using functional MRI. The results of study indicate that the activation of orbitofrontal / prefrontal areas showed no differences in both groups. However, clear deactivation of amygdala in ASD group was found by seeing negative facial expressions(fear, anger). It is consistent with the existing literatures, which indicate that the ASD children would have problems reading emotion due to facial expression, especially if the induced emotions are negative.
