Abstract
This study examines the genealogical origin and the process of of the Gyeonggi-do bird-chasing song, <U-ya-hweolhweol>. First, it is assumed that <U-ya-hweolhweol> derives from the Sadang-pae so-ri tradition in three respects. (1) In terms of distribution and performance, it shows a notable correlation with <Bang-a-taryeong> . (2) The <Sae-taryeong> type lyrics, which do not appear in other regions, consistently exhibit stylistic uniformity across Gyeonggi-do. (3) The identity of Susimga-tori is most prominently manifested in it. Second, the study investigates the stylistic changes that occurred as <U-ya-hweolhweol> was localized as a folk song, which can be categorized into three layers. (1) The original expressive features of Susimga-tori were simplified and in this process, it showed a tendency to shift towards Gyeong-tori. (2) While the fundamental melodic framework was maintained, it was “adapted” into the local musical idiom of Menari-tori. (3) some materials reveal multiple musical styles within a single piece; such stylistic coexistence can be regarded as an intermediate state situated between the two preceding layers of change This study demonstrates that the Gyeonggi-do <U-ya-hweolhweol> originated from the Seo-do Sadang-pae sori and transitioned into a local folk song. In doing so, it also offers a new perspective on the understanding of musical idioms in Gyeonggi-do.
