초록
Thomas Pynchon's Mason & Dixon (1997) is a postmodern biofiction which imaginatively constructs the lives of the eighteenth-century English scientists, Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon. Unlike most English postmodern biofictions which mainly deal with issues of an individual artist’s creativity, memory, and representation, Pynchon’s American postmodern biofiction text problematizes and revises official histories of Imperial Europe and “New World” America in a so-called “Age of Reason.” Yet, sharing, with other postmodern biofictions, postmodern suspicion on an “objective” History, Pynchon’s text paradoxically “uses and disuses, installs and deconstructs” the ideologies and conventions of historical narrative, revealing the ways in which a version of history is constructed by an individual historian/narrator in a specific context. This study is an attempt to see what kinds of historical narratives are possible in a postmodern era, especially when history is challenged or questioned, but not totally discarded.
