초록

The major project of Barth's works--The Floating Opera, The End of the Road, and Lost in the Funhouse--may be rewriting/undoing the authority of logic and literary conventions with the politics of de-aesthetics/ de-mystification, highlighting a variety of literary characters who confront the age-old issues in different ways. Barth allows readers to explore the world of chaos by creating a swing between logic and what people would usually call incoherence. With the similar strategies, Pynchon criticizes an aesthetic of presence and the myth of the Enlightenment, deconstructing the relationship between truth and nontruth, and exploring the dialectical swing between reality and magic. The characters in V realize that it is pointless to attempt to search for a single genuine truth, because truth is multifarious and produces plural responses. Then the text Mason & Dixon aims to discontinue the history of the Enlightenment, which encouraged the emphasis on rationality and reason, and the obsession with walls and boundaries. Pynchon and Barth seem to de-aestheticize/de-mystify the literature of exhaustion or conventional academia that imposes a priori criteria of all kinds of truth claims including logic, coherence, presence, and reason.
