Abstract

What is the essence of religion? In the 19th century, many western philosophers and theologians had asked the question and tried to answer it. To examine the meaning of the question, this article scrutinizes the religious consciousness of both Ludwig Feuerbach (1804-1972) who is called "a thorn in the flesh of modern theology" and Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1832) who is called "the father of modern theology" in a comparative way. Feuerbach rejects the traditional understanding of God based on metaphysical and dualistic thoughts because it has alienated a human being himself from his nature which has the infinite potentiality. Feuerbach reinterprets the value of a human nature as a human being who has the so-called "species consciousness (Gattungsbewusstsein)." Feuerbach claims that the idea of God comes from a projection of human's own essential nature, namely, "an imagined objectivity." This means that the essence of religion is "the immediate, involuntary, unconscious contemplation of the human nature as another, a distinct nature." In this sense, Feuerbach understands the essence of religion within the human nature itself. Schleiermacher renounces the metaphysical and moral approaches in understanding the essence of religion in the claim that religion is "the sensibility and taste for the infinite." Schleiermacher defines the essence of religion as intuition and feeling for the infinite, which is beyond metaphysics and morality. However, Schleiermacher, unlike Feuerbach, distinguishes deity from human nature through making the difference between the intuited and the one who intuits because all intuition comes from an influence of the intuited on the one who intuits. Schleiermacher also articulates the term feeling(Gefühl) as a kind of religious feeling or pious feeling which means that we feel ourselves absolutely dependent upon God. Schleiermacher interprets it as the "modification or mode of determination of immediate self-consciousness." In this sense, Schleiermacher discovers the essence of religion in the particular experience of the encounter between the human nature and the divine nature.
