Abstract
This study aims to clarify the mechanism of religious addiction from the affective dimension by comparatively analyzing Feuerbach’s notion of the feeling of subordination and Schleiermacher’s feeling of dependence. Research on the “mechanism of religious addiction” holds value insofar as it supplements previous studies that have remained limited to phenomenological diagnosis and prescriptive responses. To this end, the study first examines the validity and usefulness of approaching religion as a matter of feeling rather than as an activity of intellect or will—an approach adopted here as one perspective for analyzing the phenomenon of religious addiction. It then compares Schleiermacher’s view that religion originates not in intellectual assent to necessity nor in volitional commitment to the highest good, but in the human feeling of absolute dependence, with Feuerbach’s feeling of subordination. Through this comparison, the study analyzes the nature of the religious emotions that coil at the center of religious addiction. Furthermore, by investigating how the feeling of absolute dependence degenerates into a feeling of subordination—thus leading to religious addiction—the study seeks to deepen the discussion on how such degeneration may be prevented. Based on this mechanism, it also proposes a self-diagnostic system for identifying and preventing religious addiction. Religious addiction is not a phenomenon limited to specific sects or pseudoreligious groups detached from established religious traditions. Rather, it is a general phenomenon that can emerge, to varying degrees, even within institutional religions commonly regarded as orthodox. This explains the author’s resistance to earlier approaches that reduce religious addiction to an issue of individual emotional or psychological deficiency and examine it solely from a pathological standpoint. When religious addiction is viewed only at the phenomenological level, the resulting solutions remain superficial. The significance of this study lies in its effort to provide a more fundamental and structural analysis and to present corresponding alternatives.
