Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate learners' perceptions of visual cues (appearance of instructors, hand writing of instructors, use of animation, and use of pointers) frequently used in instructor's self-produced video lectures, and to analyze differences in the course satisfaction of learners. Visual cues were sub-categorized into two groups applying Mayer's (2009) multimedia principles: the first being the image principle which includes the appearance of the instructors and the second is the signaling principle which includes the hand writing of instructors, use of animations, and use of pointers. In the first semester of 2021, 583 college students registered for online English courses in general education participated in the survey. The questionnaire was divided into three categories: personal information, learners’ satisfaction (learning content, class operation, video content), and learners’ perception. The learner's perception of visual cues was analyzed through a cross-tabulation analysis, and the difference in learners’ satisfaction according to the visual cues was analyzed through a MANOVA and an independent sample t-test based on the significance level of .05. The result of the cross-tabulation analysis revealed that the preference between image and signaling principle depending on the types of signaling cues was not statistically significant. The results of the MANOVA showed that there was no statistically significant difference in learners’ satisfaction depending on the appearance of the instructor, and the use of hand writing and pointers. However, when animation was used, there was a statistically significant difference in satisfaction across all three categories. These results were judged to reflect the tendency of learners to prefer organized typeface writing in text boxes in English subjects where various visual materials are used.
