Abstract

In Korea, use of the term “K-Garden” is increasing; however, limited consensus on its core concept, scope, and essential components has led to tendencies to reduce it to the outward borrowing of traditional motifs or to commercial branding. In particular, design principles that set criteria for applying water elements and that organize edge and linkage detailing into an integrated sensory experience framework remain underdeveloped. Focusing on seven gardens by Mirei Shigemori that actually incorporate waterscape elements, this study analyzes the modes of introduction and spatial composition of those elements and, on that basis, proposes a foundation and design principles for establishing the identity of the K-Garden. From November 2023 to May 2025, four rounds of seasonal fieldwork were conducted at the seven sites, and observational notes and photographs were collected. Given that official plans are not publicly available, researcher‑reconstructed site plans were prepared and refined from field observation; for Rinshō‑ji Hōrin‑no‑niwa and Yūrin‑no‑niwa, positional consistency was verified with drone footage, while satellite imagery (Google Earth) was used as supplementary data for the other sites. The analysis was carried out garden by garden and then comparatively across the following dimensions: types and placement of waterscape elements; couplings with stonework and planting; edge and linkage details; vantage‑point structure and circulation; and the staging of sensory experience. Findings show that water in Shigemori’s gardens functions not as ornament but as a primary device of spatial organization. Ponds establish axes of center and pause; meandering streams (kyokusui) act as guiding lines that stitch together continuity and transition; and vertical drops (waterfalls) mediate acoustic effects and frame climactic scenes. In combination with edge and linkage details—such as shoreline treatments, stepping stones, and stone paving—and with planting, these three elements bind scene sequencing, wayfinding, and sensory integration into a single order. On this basis, four design principles are proposed for K-Garden application: ① setting ponds to create centers and stopping points; ② planning kyokusui to compose continuity and transition; ③ siting vertical drops to shape climax and sound; and ④ tuning connection and rhythm through edge and linkage details. By interpreting Shigemori’s construction logic—which expands traditional garden grammar into a contemporary spatial language through the incorporation of real water—this study offers both a conceptual foundation and a practical framework for the identity and design of the K-Garden.
