Abstract

The Honorary Office is a definitive factor of the co-operative and its long tradition. It exists to serve the fulfillment of the mandate to promote members' enterprises or households through the co-operative enterprise. The evaluations of the Honorary Co-operative Office so far range from “necessary” to “desirable” up to “inexpedient”. The Honorary Office doesn’t represent ideological balance for the sake of modern large co-operatives. However, the institution of the Honorary Office exists a priori to stabilize the self- administration of co-operatives having a personalistic-democratic character. The honorary activity in the board contributes not only to preventing paid office bears from losing orientation around fulfilling the promotional mandate, but at the same time it promotes the credibility of co-operatives for its members and increases the co-operative competitive advantage. In this context lawmakers have to provide a framework in which the potentials of the Honorary Co-operative Office can be activated and can be preserved.
