Abstract

A cuneiform literary work, called ‘The Dialogue of a Master and a Servant’, has been evaluated discordantly by scholars either as dealing with serious skeptical themes or as a satire or comedy. This is partly due to the unusual structure and content of the work, but it is also due to the unclear criteria used to categorize wisdom literature. Therefore, we investigated the classification criteria by examining the collections and research papers that scholars have published on wisdom literature in ancient West Asia. Scholars have generally categorized works according to content or structure, but the specific classification results have been conflicting and inconsistent. In order to derive a new classification, this paper notes that there is a need to pay attention to the position and function of literary works and their authors in ancient West Asian society. Furthermore, this paper proposes to use the concept of the process of collecting, categorizing, and spreading knowledge, referring to the findings of the sociology of knowledge. It should be noted that there are basic works that are faithful to the fundamental purpose of each stage and variations that utilize the basic works but created works in different forms. If we analyze ‘The Dialogue of a Master and a Servant’ through this new taxonomy, we can define it as a variant work that belongs to the collection and classification stage. This is because its basic purpose is to collect and enumerate various proverbs and lessons, and it does not stick to a single theme. However, a simple story is introduced and adopts the format of a dialog, and the list becomes a minimal plot. Critical discussions about reality emerge during the dialogues, but they do not develop into deep discussions on the topic, and the list is limited to registering related proverbs and lessons.
