Abstract

Did “wisdom schools” responsible for producing the Old Testament wisdom literature exist in ancient Israel? Since the late nineteenth century, as the traditional view of Solomonic authorship has been increasingly denied, many scholars have regarded books such as Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs as products of the post-exilic period and have proposed that “wisdom schools” functioned as institutions where students were educated and wisdom literature was composed, edited, and compiled. The primary arguments for this view typically rest on three factors: (1) the presence of school systems among Israel’s neighboring nations, and particularly the influence of Egypt; (2) the use of the Hebrew terms חֲכָמִים / חָכָם (“wise man” / “wise men”) in the Old Testament and the reference to a “school” in Sirach 51:23; and (3) epigraphic evidence from Israel’s monarchic period. This paper argues, however, that the Old Testament does not explicitly mention the existence of such schools and that the three factors cited above fail to convincingly demonstrate the institutional reality of such schools. Rather, in light of the internal testimony of the biblical texts themselves, this study argues that Solomon—rather than wisdom schools—should be regarded as the primary context for the composition of Israel’s wisdom literature.
