Abstract
This paper aims to trace the historical changes and background of the concept of jhāna/dhyāna, taking as its starting point the definition of its essence and etymological interpretation found in the "Samāpattinirdeśa" of the Abhidharmakośabhāśya. While the Abhidharmakośabhāśya defines the nature of dhyāna as samādhi, it states that the word itself is derived from a root meaning 'to contemplate'. According to this interpretation, dhyāna is both samādhi and a means of contemplation. To understand dhyāna in these two aspects - samādhi and contemplation - also appears in pre-Abhidharmakośabhāśya texts of the Sarvāstivāda and Yogācāra schools. In contrast, the Southern Buddhist textual tradition explains the concept of jhāna based on two roots meaning 'contemplation' and 'burning'. In Northern Buddhist texts, the meaning of 'burning' disappears and changes into samādhi, with translation issues and meditative theory in the background. Finally, this paper examines what the original meaning of jhāna/dhyāna might have been. As a result, it suggests the possibility that 'burning' rather than the commonly accepted meaning of 'contemplation' may have been the original meaning. This paper examines the historical development of the concept of jhāna/dhyāna to expand our understanding of its original meaning and process of change. What can be confirmed here is that jhāna/dhyāna, as a Buddhist meditative practice, likely functioned originally as a path to liberation aimed at attaining nirvana through the elimination of negative emotions, independent of insight into the Four Noble Truths.
