A Comparative Analysis of Service Learning Programs in Adapted Physical Activity Professional Preparation in Korea and the United States

초록

The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze service-learning courses in adapted physical activity (APA) professional preparation in universities in Korea and the United States to support APA students and instructors in Korea. APA service-learning program from four universities in Korea and the United States were examined for this study. Our findings show that APA service-learning courses in Korea had the following limitations: 1) A discrepancy between APA classroom lecture and service-learning course; 2) Limited availability of service-learning opportunities outside the university campus. Several suggestions were provided to strengthen the quality of APA service-learning programs and to prepare more competent APA practitioners in Korea. A specific guideline for APA service-learning program objective and management needs to be developed in Korean universities. Korean universities also need to collaborate with other APA organizations outside the campus to expand service-learning opportunities for the students.

Abstract
