‘에서’ 주어의 환유 양상

이 글은 ‘에서’와 결합하여 주어의 역할을 하는 명사구의 환유 양상을 살펴보는 것이 목적이다. 1) Xs 자리에 오는 단어는 ‘기관’, ‘시설’, ‘구성원’이 국면을 형성하는 다면어이다. ‘에서’와 결합하여 일반적인 부사어 자리에 쓰일 때는 ‘기관’이나 ‘시설’의 국면이 드러나지만, 주어 자리에서는 ‘기관’의 국면으로 제한된다. 2) Xs가 ‘기관’의 국면으로 일차 해석될 수 있기 때문에 ‘에서’와 결합할 수 있었지만 문장의 서술어와 어울리기 위해서는 ‘사람’의 의미를 갖추고 있어야 한다. 이렇게 Xs가 ‘기관’에서 ‘사람’의 의미로 전이하여 해석될 수 있었던 것은 이 과정에 환유가 작용하였기 때문이다. 그에 비해 ‘이/가’와 결합하는 Xs는 ‘기관’이 와야 함을 요구하지 않기 때문에 ‘기관’에서 ‘구성원’으로 전이되는 환유 작용의 동기가 사라졌으므로 국면화 과정을 통해 ‘구성원’이 직접 부각되었다고 볼 수 있다. 3) 숨은 주어설을 지지하여 주어가 숨어 있다고 하더라도 그 주어가 무엇인지 추론하여 확인하는 과정은 환유를 동반하게 된다. 이때 환유를 통해 추론 가능한 행위주는 국면 수준의 구체성을 띤다. 4) ‘쪽/측’은 ‘학교’류 단어와 유사하게 ‘조직-장소-구성원’의 국면을 가진 다면어이다. 그래서 ‘학교’류의 다면어가 주어 ‘에서’ 구문에서 보이는 환유 양상이 ‘쪽/측’에도 거의 동일하게 적용된다. 다만 ‘학교에서’와 ‘학교 쪽/측에서’를 비교했을 때, ‘학교 쪽/측에서’는 다른 하위 사건의 주체와 서로 상대적인 관계에 있음을 화용론적으로 암시한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to explore the aspects of metonymy in noun phrases that combine with ‘eseo’ to act as a subject. 1) The words in the Xs position are multifaceted words with ‘institution’, ‘facility’, and ‘member’ forming the facets. When combined with ‘eseo’ and used in a common adverbial position, the aspect of ‘institution’ or ‘facility’ is revealed, but in the subject position, it is limited to the aspect of ‘institution’. 2) Since Xs can be interpreted as ‘institution’ in the first place, it can be combined with ‘eseo’, but it must have the meaning of ‘person’ to match the predicate of the sentence. The reason why Xs can be interpreted as a transition from ‘institution’ to ‘person’ is that metonymy is involved in this process. On the other hand, Xs that combines with ‘this/that’ do not require an ‘institution’ to come, so the motivation for metonymy to transfer from ‘institution’ to ‘member’ is lost, so it can be said that ‘member’ is directly highlighted through the facetization process. 3) In support of the hidden subject theory, even if the subject is hidden, the process of inferring and identifying what the subject is is accompanied by metonymy. At this time, the actor that can be inferred through metonymy has specificity at the facet level. 4) ‘jjok/cheuk’ is a multifaceted word with the dimensions of ‘organization, place, and member’ similar to the word ‘school’. Therefore, the metonymy that is seen in the ‘eseo’ phrase for multifaceted words like ‘school’ applies almost equally to ‘jjok/cheuk’.
