『개벽』 유통망의 현황과 담당층

이 글은 개벽이 1920년대의 시대정신 나아가 근대지성사의 보고가 되기까지의 과정을 ‘근대미디어의 탄생과 성장’이란 차원에서 조망코자 했다. 즉 근대적 매체로서의 잡지 개벽이 어떻게 당대 최고의 잡지가 되었고, 어떻게 시대적 총아로서의 역할을 수행했는가를 밝히고자 했다. 이를 위해 필자는 개벽의 유통망에 주목했다. 개벽의 유통망은 잡지의 대중적 성공을 이끌어 낸 핵심동력이자, 매체를 둘러싼 인적 소통체계의 근간이기도 했기 때문이다. 실제로 ‘52개 지사와 62개 분사’로 이루어진 개벽의 유통망은 당대 거대 미디어 자본인 신문의 유통망에 필적할 만한 것으로 매체의 대중적 유통과 ‘지명도’에 결정적 영향을 미쳤고, 이와 동시에 개벽을 둘러싼 사회 제세력간의 소통을 실질적으로 매개했다. 자연스럽게 이 글은 실증적 문제에 집중되었다. 우선 개벽의 유통망의 전모를 밝히고, 지-분사의 유형과 그 담당자들의 정체를 실증코자 했다. 나아가 개벽의 핵심독자층을 밝히고, ‘문화권력’으로서의 개벽의 ‘실체’에 접근코자 했다.
Abstract
This paper tried to examine course of Gaebyuk becoming Zeitgeist of the 1920s and one step further a treasurehouse in terms of birth and rising of modern media. That is, this paper is about how magazine Gaebyuk as modern media become the highest magazine of the day and how it played a role as the lion of the day. For this purpose, I paid attention to the circulation network of Gaebyuk , which was a central motivityled to popular success of the magazine and also was the basis of communication system of manpower. Actually, constituted branch offices(支社) of 52 and commission agent offices (分社) of 62, the circulation network was a match for that of newspaper as media giant, which had influence decisively on popular circulation and nomination degree and, at the same time, mediated communication with different social forces around Gaepyuk. This paper tried to hold the actual proves of the forms of branch office-commission agent office and idebtity of its persons in charge, to make clear the whole aspects of the magazine’s circulation network and central reader group. therefore, I hope that this paper could show a position of Gaebyuk as “cutural power.”
