Local governments in Korea started employing their own interpreters/ translators 20 years ago. Researchers in translation studies, however, have not yet taken much interest in these translators/interpreters since those translators/interpreters have not undergone professional interpreting/translation training. This paper seeks to take a microscopic view into how taking graduate-level courses in interpretation and translation benefitted a local government interpreter. It uses the research method of narrative inquiry to look into the change in the research participant's understanding of interpretation/translation and development of her interpretation/translation skills, language proficiency, knowledge, work ethic and service mindset, specifically with respect to how the participant established herself as a professional interpreter/ translator in the organization.
