Abstract

Numerous grandiose blueprints for futuristic urban environments – first envisioned in the early twentieth century by modernist architects and urban designers such as Le Corbusier (1887-1965), Ludwig Hilberseimer (1885-1967) and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) – often overlap conceptually with the ubiquitous presence of today’s Korean cityscapes. Rows upon rows of sleek, high-rise apartments and office buildings create an almost surreal, glitzy and glamorous atmosphere, evoking the bold visions of early modernist urbanism. Amidst this spectacular and even phantasmagoric urban backdrop, traces of bygone eras remain subtly embedded in the landscape – hidden yet persistently evolving into a self-sustaining patrimonial form. These remnants, like historic relics, coexist in a kind of symbiosis with the futuristic cityscape of the present. Similarly, a patchwork of surviving colonial-era buildings – designed and constructed by foreign (mostly German and British) and Japanese architects working in the globally popular European historicist styles and their colonial adaptations – oddly blends into the multilayered, hypermodern fabric of contemporary Korean cities. In this way, recalling that the traces of colonial modern architecture – mnemonic colonial residues that embody collective memory – still connect with our present urban everyday life as meaningful memories, this paper examines how the Western modernist movement – rooted in rationalism and functionalism – impacted the fields of art and architecture among intellectuals in colonial Korea during the 1920s and 1930s, particularly those who led discourses on household and lifestyle improvement. It explores how the resulting comprehensive discourse on modernization influenced perceptual shifts in colonial Korea’s architectural culture. Building on this, the study investigates how the legacy of Western modern architectural movements of the 1920s and 1930s manifested in the urban landscape of post-liberation and postwar Seoul – formerly colonial Keijo (Gyeongseong) – with a focus on the postcolonial urban scenery depicted in the 1956 film Holiday in Seoul (Seourui hyuil).
