Abstract

This study uses the IMF's Coordinated Portfolio Investment Survey (CPIS) to build a global network of cross-border equity investments over the period 2001–2023, and employs k-core decomposition and community detection to analyze its hierarchical structure and dynamic reorganization. Our analysis yields three main findings. First, exits of peripheral countries at lower coreness levels became less frequent, while intermediate tiers showed greater persistence, signaling stronger network cohesion and robustness. Second, major global shocks—including the Global Financial Crisis, U.S.–China trade tensions, and the COVID-19 pandemic—temporarily contracted the maximum core. Traditional financial hubs and advanced economies, however, remained embedded, whereas emerging economies were repeatedly excluded. Third, community detection reveals that blocs centered on the U.S., U.K., and Eurozone persisted over time, although crises triggered temporary fragmentation and elevated the role of offshore financial centers. In the 2020s, shifts in the community affiliations of Asian economies were driven by institutional factors including intensified U.S.– China rivalry, financial sanctions, and the U.K.’s post-Brexit policy adjustments. Taken together, these findings highlight that the global financial space combines hierarchical stability with structural fluidity, reflecting both resilience at the core and reconfiguration at the community level under institutional and geopolitical pressures.
