Abstract

Mass migration was going after postwar when wartime labour shortages opened up all sorts of opportunities, especially unskilled manual, half skilled labour, and administrative position to people of colour. In the early years, several thousand single man came to seek employment. As numbers grew rapidly during the 1950s and 1960s, chain migration led to the reconstitution of large parts of many sojourners' kinship network, so that many of those who lived nearby, and alongside whom they worked in the workshop, were either kinsmen or fellow villagers. Immigration law in 1968 severely restricting further entry passed. This legislation had the counter impact, alerting many men who had settled since the 1960s, to call for their families. In this process, several thousand families from the Indian subcontinent arrived. Indian residents in East Africa came to Britain in voluntary and in some cases forced exodus concurrently. They have risen to the challenge and pressed forward despite the exclusion and discrimination they have encountered, and in doing so have relied extensively on the strengths and resilience generated within their own self-created worlds such as the maintenance of family and kinship ties, and the generation of a sense of a communal solidarity on the basis of common.
