Abstract

This study examines the development and historical significance of the student movement at Mokpo Public Commercial School (hereafter Moksang) in 1929. Established in 1920, Moksang operated under the Co-education between Korean and Japanese Students (內鮮共學) system from its inception, promoted by Japanese colonial authorities as a model institution of the ‘Harmony between Japan and Korea’ (內鮮融和) policy. In November 1929, students who learned of the Gwangju Student Movement launched large-scale street demonstrations on the 19th and 22nd, targeting Songdo Shrine and Mokpo Police Station in radical protests. During the movement, 79 students were arrested and 18 indicted. Cross-analysis of School register and criminal case files reveals that approximately 75% of enrolled students participated, with the movement led by third- and fourth-year reading club members. The Moksang student movement exhibits three historical characteristics. First, it served as the crucial bridge connecting South Jeolla Province and Seoul as the first solidarity demonstration during the nationwide spread of the Gwangju Student Movement. Second, it exposed the fundamental hypocrisy of colonial ideology when Korean students led a large-scale movement at a school promoted as a model of the ‘Harmony between Japan and Korea’ policy. Third, socialist slogans emerged earlier and more radically than in other regions, marking what scholars consider the beginning of the Gwangju Student Movement’s second phase. This radicalism facilitated the generational transition of socialist movement leadership in Mokpo during the 1930s. This study quantifies participation through an analysis of the school register and reveals organizational connections between reading clubs and the Singan Association Mokpo chapter, and identifies Songdo Shrine as the demonstration’s ultimate target. These findings demonstrate how individual school case studies illuminate the regional specificities and nationwide diffusion of the Gwangju Student Movement.
